OK, it’s wet, cold, dark and miserable and every molecule in your body is urging you to stay cosy in bed and ignore your conscience telling you that you need to get back in the saddle. However, there comes a time when you have to face up to the fact that there’s literally no good box sets left to binge through, the Christmas booze and treats are all gone and your ass is taking that little bit longer to get up off the couch. This is exactly the time you need make the move back onto your bike after a festive break. But, instead of dwelling on the negatives, the pain of getting back to fitness and pounding the streets in the cold and wet, just consider the many positives of re-starting your cycling regime…
Shift The Winter Bulge Quick
You don’t need scientific confirmation to know that you’ve likely put on a few Kgs over the festive season. In fact, most of us put on around 3-5 Kgs and it’s not difficult to appreciate why – lots of celebratory food and booze, and a lot less exercise!
But if you can get back in the saddle before your waistline expands too much, you’ll benefit quickly from burning more calories and jump starting your body with feel-good endorphins. The first couple of sessions may be painful, so take it easy on yourself at first, but you’ll get back up to speed in no time with a refreshed, mind body and soul.

After all, just consider the number of athletes that swear by cold therapy to help treat injuries and reduce inflammations from training and competing. They all know that there are anti-inflammatory effects of cold that can relieve your body of many aches and pains.
Feel Good Quick
We’ve all heard about the negative effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – those annual winter blues where a lack of Vitamin D from the sun means your general energy levels are sapped and you feel more moody. These symptoms most often resolve themselves during the spring and summer months, but why wait till then?
Getting into your saddle, especially with a group of friends, is a good way to combat depression. Social activity has been found to positively contribute to the psychological and physiological factors that contribute to better mind-body health. In short, sport and activity undertaken regularly acts as a natural antidepressant and SAD-buster.
Up For The Challenge
There’s no doubt that winter training is a true test of your fortitude and discipline, but this in itself is a huge positive – giving you an ideal opportunity to break the cycle of "plateauing" where your gains are static despite rigorous training. By coming out of your comfort zone and challenging winter you can activate new performance goals and stimulate new ways to be a better cyclist in 2022.
